Rugged Connectivity: Lessons Learned from High-End Racing
Top Competitors Take Big Data and the Internet of (Boating) Things To the High Seas in Their Quest for the America's Cup.
Published on the Occasion of the 36th America's Cup World Series (ACWS) Race in Auckland, New Zealand, December 17-19, 2020
By Stuart Doe, Head of Active Solutions, Fischer Connectors
High-end racing, whether on land or water, is notorious for its secrecy. With the Prada Cup and America's Cup races in 2021, no one working with any of the hyper-competitive teams would dare give away those secrets.
Spoiler alert: This isn't about secrets. Even though Fischer Connectors is the exclusive connectivity sponsor of American Magic - a challenger for the 36th America's Cup - and has provided connectors and solutions for many racing yachts over the past five decades, we can't give away any of our trusted partners' competitive secrets. This article is about the lessons learned working on various racing yachts over time, and how some of the latest connector technology and strategies used in racing can be applied to other real-world applications.
Racing into 2021
From the moment the America's Cup AC75 class rule was first published on March 29, 2018 by the current America's Cup Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, challenger teams have been designing and engineering their boats within the set rules to give them every possible edge in a temperamental racing environment. In fact, American Magic spent over 76,000 man hours producing its first AC75, DEFIANT.
So, what are the stats for an AC75?
- Length: 22.76 m
- Width: 5 m
- Weight 6.4 tons
- Crew: 11
- Crew weight: 990 kilos
- Construction: carbon fiber and double-skinned soft mainsails
- Construction hours: 76,000+
- Design hours: 90,000+
- CNC machine and/or 3D printing hours: 45,000
- Individual parts: 25,000
- Sensors: 400+
Races can be won or lost in the design, construction, and/or operational phases. Even fractions of seconds are of critical importance in a race for the America's Cup and for the pride of a nation. Despite huge R&D budgets, it's ultimately the team of 11 sailors working as one in precise harmony that determines who'll be the winners on race day. So, the engineering teams do everything they can to give their sailors the advantage.
Electronics play a key role in crossing the finish line first, especially when dealing with ever-changing wind and wave conditions. Fischer Connectors is an official supplier of fiber optic connectors for American Magic, Challenger for the 36th America's Cup. ©Amory Ross / NYYC American Magic

KEI in the SourceToday Top 50 Electronic Distributors!
Annually, this compilation of distributors of electronic components is highly publicized in several publications, including Electronic Design, Machine Design and SourceESB. The content is housed on SourceToday and it is the most viewed content all year long, every year!
The general mood among electronics distributors as they entered 2018 was one of "cautious optimism." The outlook grew darker in the first few months as the long shadow of a possible all-out trade war between the U.S. and China seemed increasingly likely. As the year unfolded, the shadow lifted and so did the caution. After the dust settled, 2018 turned out to be a very good year for electronics distributors.
The results are captured in the SourceToday Top 50 Distributor ranking. Overall, the 50 companies on the list posted combined 2018 revenue of $158.8 billion, a $14.4-billion or 10.7% improvement over 2017.

INTRODUCING the 0.4 mm PRESS-FIT TERMINAL
The all-new 0.4mm EON press-fit zone is designed to work with the now industry-standard plated-through-hole size of 0.60 +/- 0.05mm. The press-fit zone achieves optimum retention strength at each end of the PTH size range by employing a combination of elastic and plastic deformation, which is biased towards the former at the lower end of the PTH size range, and towards the latter at the higher end of the PTH size range. At no point is the elongation allowed to exceed the material limit, to eliminate the likelihood of micro-crack formation.

Kensington Joins ERA!!
Memberships and collaboration continue to be important to Kensington Electronics in its goal to stay at the forefront of the electronics industry. Partnerships in this industry are crucial. That is why Kensington is proud to announce their membership with the Electronics Representative Association, ERA.
About ERA...
In October of 1935, a small group of radio parts representatives gathered in New York City to share experiences and exchange ideas and knowledge about the still-developing industry. This momentous meeting led to what has become today's Electronics Representatives Association. The representatives, who held that first meeting in the office of D.R. "Danny" Bittan, decided to call their organization "The Peddlers." By the following month, more than 32 representatives gathered at the Hotel Edison in New York to elect the association's first officers: President Jack Price, Vice President Earl Dietrich and Secretary/Treasurer Dave Sonkin. At this time, the name "The Peddler's" was deemed rather unsophisticated for a group of professional salesmen, and a new name, "The Representatives of Radio Parts Manufacturers", was adopted.
By 1936, membership had grown to 78, and plans were initiated to establish "chapters" or"sections" in leading cities throughout the country. During these early days, the association established its bylaws and initial objective - "To create a spirit of mutual respect, esteem and cooperation among its members and the radio and allied industries" - paving the way for the future.
Unlike many similar organizations, ERA endured throughout the years of World War II, thanks to the guidance and perseverance of its leaders, namely then-president Sam MacDonald. During the latter half of the 1940s, the office operation of the association was moved from New York to Chicago. At this time, the first staff members were hired to help the Industry Relations Committee publish directories and send mailings to industry members. And in 1948, the first Representor newsletter was published as a service to both the membership and the radio-parts industry.
The 1950s was a critical period in ERA's development. In 1953, membership in ERA changed from an individual basis to a company basis, and in 1954, the association adopted its first official Code of Ethics. During this time, ERA officially became a professional trade association, rather than a semi-social group. Also during this decade, the first, full-time executive director was hired to manage the affairs of the national operation. In 1958, the association changed its name to the Electronics Representatives Association.
As ERA has continued to grow with progressive programs, so has its role as a functional group in the electronics industry. Many of ERA's most successful programs serve to bring the rep to a closer working relationship with manufacturers and distributors. These programs include the expansion of the Lines Available service, the restructuring of the ERA Insurance Trust, the development of educational and industry seminar programs, the restructuring of the national offices to include product group vice presidents, and increased involvement in the participation of ERA on trade show boards.
These programs also include the expansion of membership to include manufacturers and distributors, the shifting of the ERA Conference to an annual event, an enhanced Lines Available service, the offering of bi-monthly educational teleforums, a growing roster of Expert Access providers, the addition of many new member services and continuing involvement as a sponsor of the EDS Summit.

Kensington Electronics staff is proud to volunteer at the Central Texas Food Bank.
After the devastating losses in Texas in the wake of Hurrican Harvey, Kensington Electronics's staff felt compelled to help their neighbors, who had lost so much, as best they could. Harvey's wrath was felt from the coast of Texas all the way inland to the southern Austin metropolitan counties.
A leader in the fight against hunger for nearly 35 years, Central Texas Food Bank's mission is to nourish hungry people and lead the community in the fight against hunger. With a lot of help, the Food Bank has been able to respond immediately by ordering, receiving and then shipping truckloads of food and supplies to food banks in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey and to our own partner agencies. As of now, they have shipped more than 400,000 pounds of emergency food, water and hygiene products thanks to individuals and groups, from all over the nation as far as New York to California, who stepped up to help.

Helping with the victims of Hurricane Harvey
Hurricane Harvey has left behind devastating losses in its wake. FEMA Director Brock Long called Harvey the worst disaster in Texas history. The Weather Channel says Harvey, "...may end up being one of the worst flood disasters in U.S. History." People have no homes, no clean clothing, and no food. The shelters in the Houston area are at, or nearing, capacity and approximately 7,000 evacuees are being sent to Austin to be sheltered. Our neighbors in Houston, La Grange, Port Aransas, Rockport and all along the coast need our help in this time of need. Kensington Electronics believes that 'our thoughts being with the victims' is just not enough and we want to do what we can to help our friends and family here in our home state of Texas.
Therefore, Kensington is proud to announce donations to The Central Texas Food Bank and to the Texas Diaper Bank to help provide food and diapers to those who have lost so much. Additionally, Kensington's employees are coming together as a group to volunteer at the Central Texas Food Bank warehouse to help sort food and make relief boxes. We hope that our Vendors and Customers will join with us to show our love and support for everyone effected by this catastrophic event. #HurricaneHarvey #HelpforHouston #HarveyFlood #TexasStrong
About the Central Texas Food Bank (www.centraltexasfoodbank.org)
Central Texas Food Bank works with food donors across the country, financial supporters and volunteers to fill unmet needs in Central Texas. This commitment from private, government and charitable partners has allowed us to bring 31 million meals to our community last year and into the hands of families and local nonprofits that turn to us for help. There are three key ways we do this.
- We share free food and our knowledge on low-cost, healthy eating with families in need. Learn how we stock their shelves, provide healthy meals and educate.
- We assist families who qualify for federal assistance programs. Learn how we connect families to life-enhancing resources.
- And finally, we make food affordable for charitable and government partners. The quality food and food resources we provide means that they can spend their limited resources to enhance their programs. Learn how we strengthen community services.
We believe there's strength in numbers and in working together. We are members of Feeding America and Feeding Texas (formerly the Texas Food Bank Network). Our service territory includes: Bastrop, Bell, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Coryell, Falls, Fayette, Freestone, Gillespie, Hays, Lampasas, Lee, Limestone, Llano, McLennan, Milam, Mills, San Saba, Travis and Williamson counties. Roughly 250 Partner Agencies have joined us to serve families in 21 Central Texas counties at soup kitchens, food pantries, after-school programs, snack programs and other service sites.
A leader in the fight against hunger for nearly 35 years, our mission is to nourish hungry people and lead the community in the fight against hunger.

Fischer Connectors celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Fischer Connectors celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
Fischer Connectors, a worldwide leader in push-pull circular connectors, celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
The company Walter Werner Fischer founded in 1954 has become a key player in the connecting industry with over 400 employees working worldwide. To mark this milestone, Fischer Connectors opened its doors mid-June for a large number of celebration activities.
Over 300 people including several clients, politicians, distributors and most of the Fischer Connectors sales force worldwide gathered at the official reception of the 60th anniversary on Friday 13 June. '60 years ago, my father started this company in his garage in Morges', said Peter Fischer, son of founder Walter Werner and President of the Board of Administration of Fischer Connectors. 'In 1962, he patented the first Fischer push-pull connectors and ten years after founding the company, the family house was too small for the 15 employees.' As a result, the company moved to the Villa Geissmann in Morges.
Fischer Connectors didn't stop growing. In 1975 the company moved from Morges to a bigger factory in Apples, a village located almost 10 kilometers away. The 80s and 90s marked the international development, with the opening of several subsidiaries and a distribution network worldwide, a strategy implemented by Peter Fischer, head of sales at that stage and nominated as General Director in 1996. Under the leadership of CEO Dominique Glauser, appointed in 2004, the company started its modernization, introducing new supply chain management methods, lean manufacturing and continuous innovation in technology, products and solutions. In 2008, Fischer Connectors moved to its current site in Saint-Prex, a state-of-the-art purpose built factory, and continued to grow. Currently, over 400 people work for Fischer Connectors in the Swiss headquarters or one of the eight subsidiaries.
The history of Fischer Connectors is a real success story of a healthy and constantly growing company. 'We are proud to have Fischer Connectors in our Canton', stated Philippe Leuba, Minister of Economy and Sports of the Canton of Vaud. 'It is especially a pleasure to see that a small family business has become a big international player and creates employment in our region.'
Fischer Connectors' employees had the opportunity to celebrate and show their workplace to their families the day after the official celebrations, with 750 guests sharing this excellent moment of conviviality. Kensington is proud to carry the entire Fischer line of products.

OpenVPX enables tightly coupled FPGA and CPU processing for unmanned EW platforms.
By Eran Strod, Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions
OpenVPX brings together high-speed parallel processing FPGAs with the software capability of CPUs to meet the most challenging sensor processing applications for unmanned platforms.
Today's UAVs, UGVs, and UUVs are being enhanced with an increasing amount of sensors. The huge amount of incoming data from these Electronic Warfare (EW) sensors needs to be processed as close to real-time as possible. As processing elements go, the FPGA is ideal as a sensor interface. It is great at performing a fixed algorithm on parallel data with unmatched speed and very low latency. High-end FPGAs are equipped with a large number of serial or parallel interfaces, allowing them to input large quantities of raw data that is then preprocessed.

LED Lights Help Fantasy Springs Casino Save 291,000 kWh of Energy and Receive $32,000 Rebate.
"Prior to receiving the LED lights from LEDtronics, we were using high-pressure sodium lamps, which gave off a dirty, dim color and a lot of heat," states Todd Lockway, Fantasy Springs Casino Facilities Director. "The new LEDs reduce the heat load and offer a whiter, brighter light. And by reducing our energy use from 180 watts ballasted to 41 watts, we qualified for an energy rebate, and this LED lighting project will pay for itself in 2.5 years."
LEDtronics, the pioneers of solid-state, LED lighting design and manufacturing in the United States, provided:
- LED Post Top E39 Mogul Base bulbs, (LED30MH-30X2W-XPW-001)
The 41-watt LED products were placed in the existing fixtures and replaced the 150 watt, HPS lights inside the casino's parking garage structure. - LED T8 tube lights (LED48T8SM-276-XPW-001W)
LEDS were used as "uplights" for the landscape area and wall-washing illumination on the outside of the structure. - LED wall packs (WWL12-8X2W-XPW-001)
27-watt LED products replaced the vintage, 70 Watt HPS wall packs on the outside of the parking structure.
