BosCon Connectors
The first cULus certified large-format PV connector

We are excited to announce the launch of the new BosCon connector, a product made in the USA.

Staubli BosCon Connectors
BosCon is the first connector for large-format PV cable that is fully cULus listed to UL6703 and CSA C22.2. No. 182.5, "Connectors for Use in Photovoltaic Systems". The connector was designed for high power electrical balance of system (eBOS) trunk cables, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and EV charging systems. It ensures safety and long-term reliability in harsh and outdoor environments, while simplifying system installation and maintenance.

The BosCon connector is certified for both factory and field installation with 3/0 AWG through 500 MCM Copper cables with a maximum ampacity rating of 620 A at 1500 V AC/DC. It was specifically designed to confidently seal, strain relief and terminate with low and high strand count Copper PV cable.

BosCon also features an innovative mechanical coding system that allows for seven different uniquely-keyed configurations that incorporate color-coding on both the socket and plug sides. This meets NEC requirements and helps prevent the significant risks that come with cross-mating of poles and/or phases.

Omnetics Micro-D connectors

Omnetics Micro-D Connectors are ideal for critical, high reliability industries, including aerospace, military, and medical. They are also used in devices such as: optics, guidance systems, on-board equipment, space and UAV systems. They are built to meet or exceed the specifications of MIL-DTL-83513. Highly rugged and compact designs in shell styles from 9 to 51 contacts. The Micro-D connectors incorporate Omnetics one-piece flex pin design for greater shock and vibration resistance. The high reliability gold plated flex pin is designed for >2,000 mating cycles. Omnetics Micro-D connectors will operate from -55oC to 125oC.

The Flex Pin Design - Designed Simply for High Shock & Vibration

Omnetics' Flex Pin contact design is a wonderfully engineered piece, designed and produced many years before the creation of MIL-DTL-83513. This simple one piece design is stamped from Beryllium Copper per ASTM B488. The spring characteristic of BeCu is ideal for withstanding high shock and vibration situations. The Flex Pin contact is inter-mateable with all MIL- DTL- 83513 sockets. Its rugged design easily passes the shock and vibration requirements of the military specifications. In fact, independent tests have proved that the Flex Pin contact can even withstankd the intense shock and vibrations of the geophysical drilling market.

Flex Pin contacts are all plated with 50 micro inches (1.27 μm) of gold over 50 micro inches (l .27 μm) of nickel. All pins are plated post forming to insure a non-porous surface.

The Flex Pin - Superior one-piece design

The Omnetics nano Flex Pin has been in successful production for over 25 years, while its young counterpart the nano twist pin is relatively new. Nano twist pin manufacturers took an old standard and shrunk it down to nano size. Omnetics on the other hand looked at the old technology and found ways to improve and simplify the design. Omnetics removed the extra crimps and welds and came up with an elegant one piece design with the same performance as the overly complex twist pin. The elimination of extra joints removed resistance points as well as spots for potential fatigue and failure.

Micro Flex Pins are rated at 3 amps each and are the foundation of our Micro-D & MIL-DTL-83513 series of connectors.

CONEC Hybrid Connector

One connector instead of two or three, shorter assembly times, no cable tangle, less weight on the end device (motor, for example). These are the convincing arguments for the CONEC Hybrid connector series.

CONEC hybrid connectors are among the first products to comply with the future IEC 61076-2-118 standard.

  • The individual wiring of stranded wires in a control cabinet is too time-consuming for you, are you looking for a system for decentralised control?
  • You would like to finally put an end to "cable tangle" on the machine and save costs and material at the same time?
  • You are looking for a system that guarantees the safety of an IEC standard?
  • You need a system that allows you to plug in without errors and without the need for a complex occupancy plan?
  • Are you looking for a connector system that can be securely locked without time-consuming screwing with a torque spanner?
  • Do you need a connector solution that enables you to quickly exchange a module in a production line, for example?

CONEC Hybrid Connector Series

One system, multiple application possibilities
CONEC Hybrid connector system for more efficiency in modular mechanical engineering

The CONEC Hybrid connector series combines power supply and data transmission in one connector. Different sizes (B12, B17, B23, B40) for various power classes from drives or devices offer maximum fl exibility. Whether for small DC drives or powerful servo drives, CONEC Hybrid connectors are the perfect solutions.

Locking of mated connector is secured with a bayonet fastener, so that a time-consuming screw connection by means of a torque wrench is no longer necessary. A quarter turn ensures a secure connection and IP67 protection class. It is important to note that the bayonet can only be locked, if the hybrid connectors are completely mated in. The risk of failure due to incompletely mated or unscrewed connectors is thus greatly reduced.

Advantages
  • Space-saving by transmitting data and power via one single connector
  • Modular system
  • Reduced wiring
  • Shorter assembly times
  • Cost savings
  • Fast and secure connection with bayonet locking
  • Degree of protection IP67
  • Improved diagnostic possibilities
  • Compact and robust design

Fields of Application
  • Drive technology
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Robotics
  • Assembly and production lines
  • Renewable energy

Spring Probes - Stable and Durable Signal Integrity

Spring probes, featuring IDI technology, are designed to optimize performance in high reliability, multicycle applications. Spring probes are compliant which makes them ideal for blind mate applications as they selfcorrect for x, y, z, rotational and angular misalignment of the target. Offered in compressed heights less than 2 mm and utilized on pitches as tight as 0.4 mm, they are well suited for high density, board-to-board, battery contact and high frequency applications. Spring probes provide reliable electro-mechanical performance through hundreds of thousands of cycles. They are available in a variety of sizes, spring forces and terminations. Smiths Interconnect compression mount connectors utilizing spring probe technology offer tremendous advantages in reliability, performance and efficiency in comparison to conventional technologies like stamped metal, wire mesh, pin-and-socket or elastomer. Standard spring probes offering includes battery contact and connector probes designed to optimize contact performance in high-reliability, multiple-cycle interconnect applications.

Spring probe connectors are compliant on the surface of their mating half, rather than extending into it as with conventional pin and socket connectors. This bestows spring probes with unique blind-mate capabilities.

A spring probe connector may be designed to engage at a 90o angle to its target, wiping into position to clear contaminants. Conversely, the connector may be disengaged in the same way, at any angle, making probe technology the best approach to quick-disconnect applications.

Spring probe technology permits a very high compliance-to-length ratio. This allows Smiths Interconnect to design connectors as dense as 2mm, while maintaining 0.5mm of compliance. Spring probe connectors are low profile designs which are forgiving of challenging mating conditions and vibration environments.

Although they were invented in 1952, the D-SUB is still widely used today. Conec offers both standard filtered D-SUBs, filtered high density D-SUBs, and filtered combination D-SUBs where applications call for power and signal. Conec offers filters in C, LC, and pi filters.

What are filters and what do they do?

C filters are a capacitor-input filter circuit in which the first element is a capacitor connected in parallel with the output of the rectifier in a linear power supply.

LC filters consist of a combination of inductors (L) and capacitors (C) to cut or pass specific frequency bands of an electric signal.

Pi filters will have multiple combinations of component values that all produce the impedance necessary for the given frequency. Pi filters are considered to be more efficient. The Pi filter will also produce a high output voltage with minimal current drain, producing only a very small voltage drop at the output.

Micro-D & Nano-D Connectors for Military & Aerospace

Micro-D connectors are emerging as the most often selected for cable interconnections in today's evolution of miniaturization.

The need for ruggedized, miniature connectors that can enable quickly-changed modules, instruments, or even sensors and probes is becoming a norm.

The older micro-d connector is still extensively used as a standard in many existing designs and has established heritage with experienced designers in the industry. As new electronic technology and methods evolve, we see higher demand for module and component interchangeability. Often the change process must occur in the field or away from a technical bench. The existing military standards specify the micro-d connector size and format to ensure reliability and inter-mate capability from brand to brand.

The current problem: The current connectors require hand tools to lock and unlock the jack-screws that hold the mated pair in place.

The solution: Omnetics new Latching Micro-D connectors have been built onto the same placement as the old jack-screws but offer quick connection without any extra tools. Omnetics Micro-D subminiature connectors are QPL qualified and designed and manufactured to meet and exceed MIL-DTL-83513. The connector assembly is built to assure the highest performance through high shock and vibration applications as well as extreme environmental use. They use the proven beryllium copper spring pin to socket contact system plated with both nickel and gold that assures the highest quality for mating and de-mating and very low contact resistance. Pin and sockets are set at .050" center to center lines. The standard and COTs models are available in pin counts from 9 through 51 positions and come available in solder cup and wired as well as board mount configurations. The collection of Micro-D connectors also includes special high temperature versions, deep space versions with NASA qualified low outgassing, as well as mixed signal designs fabricated to match your application directly.

Industry 4.0: Welcome to the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Industry 4.0: Welcome to the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Inexpensive sensors, fast networks, industrial globalization, and software advances including AI and machine learning have created an environment where factories, supply chains, workers, consumers, and investors can be connected everywhere, all the time.

Industry 4.0, propelled by the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), is transforming business by embracing connectivity. IIoT connects the full scope of business operations using internet technology to link machines, workers, and corporate systems with a goal of accelerating operations, improving quality, and boosting financial performance. New technologies and components, including affordable processors and sensors that provide real-time access to information, along with advancements in network connectivity and artificial intelligence, are increasing capabilities and reducing costs.

Three challenges related to increased connectivity stand between today's business architectures and the Industry 4.0 future. These challenges are defeating cyberattacks and security breaches, integrating global supply chains, and fully implementing the capabilities of high-performance networks.

Cybersecurity

Malicious actors are already looking for ways to hack Industry 4.0 operations, and a series of early attacks on manufacturing and infrastructure demonstrate the scope of risks connected networks face. Security practices designed for minimally networked systems rely on isolation and local access controls. Those practices are fundamentally inadequate when industrial systems are connected through industrial connectivity protocols such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) that gather and analyze real-time data to monitor and control the activities of equipment. Without constant surveillance and network security practices that constantly evolve to stay ahead of potential attacks, Industry 4.0 solutions can open networks to potential interference.

Building security into Industry 4.0 solutions is essential to address the vulnerabilities created by increased connectivity. Because suppliers and partners are closely integrated within an Industry 4.0 solution, IoT-related vendors (hardware and software vendors, service providers, consultants, and others) must be integrated into security plans. Most Industry 4.0 transformations include actions to align with U.S. or international cybersecurity standards such as NIST SP 800-53 or ISO 27001.

Fischer-Connectors-IIoT-SPE

Fischer Connectors designs, manufactures, and distributes rugged connectors and cable assemblies particularly suitable for applications requiring faultless precision, durability and resistance to extreme conditions. They can now combine SPE's unique features with their renowned high-reliability, high-performance, sealed connectors to take SPE connectivity to new heights and markets.

Disposable vs. Reusable...Why choose disposable?

Once medical cables have been opened, they need to be sterilized before they can be used again, whether or not they ever came in contact with the patient. Steps involved include:
  • Prolonged soaking, cleaning and rinsing in pH-neutral enzymatic cleansers and sanitizers that are compatible with all device materials
  • Testing to measure and/or calculate continuity to verify functionality as well as isolation (cross talk), to detect any breakdown of electrical insulation
  • Short circuits are detected by measuring the resistance between each pair of electrodes
All of this is necessary to eliminate cross contamination between patients.

According to a study released by Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, medical supply reprocessing, including maintenance, packaging, labor, and high-level disinfection. costs about $0.51 to $0.77 per instrument, with only 13% to 21.9% of opened instruments ultimately used. When reusable pacing wires are opened for a surgical procedure, all wires are exposed and must be decontaminated, re-assembled, and sterilized, regardless of whether the cables were used.

The alternative is disposable cables. Manufacturers can save time by eliminating the need to clean and disinfect wires between patient use. When choosing a disposable connector, the medical industry cannot rely on low-cost, poor-quality connectors. Failure is not an option.

Smiths Interconnect's Hypergrip® Series disposable connectors are designed to meet customer's ergonomic requirements and reduce total system cost by delivering a reliable interconnect solution for single or few uses, ideal for applications that don't require high cycle life but still require a premium disposable connector, mated with a high cycle receptacle.

What are some key decisions to make when buying a Rack and Panel connector? Why do you need a Rack and Panel connector?

Let's start with the why.

Designers use Rack & Panel connectors to connect a device and an equipment rack, which are primarily connections in critical environments for the medical, aerospace, and defense industries that need blind mating capabilities.

What key factors should a design engineer look for?
What environment will the connector be in?
How many mating cycles do you need?
How much force do you have to put in to remove the device from the panel?
What space constraints do you have?

L Series Connectors, from Smiths Interconnect, are high density, modular, rack & panel connectors that include coax and high current contacts up to 200 A. The L series is used in demanding applications where the environment requires durability, ruggedization, and extended operating life. Utilizing Hypertac® hyperboloid contact technology, the interconnects offer high mating cycles (up to 100,000) combined with low insertion and extraction mating forces, as well as unsurpassable immunity to shock and vibration. This modular building block system enables for custom connectors with large numbers of contacts to be configured in to a single frame. The user is capable, therefore, of selecting and customizing the connector to meet the exact requirements with off the shelf components and shortened lead times.

HALO GEmini™ and GEmini+™

HALO News...

September 14, 2021
Save space without compromising on performance with Halo's GEmini™ and GEmini+™

As devices get smaller, save space without compromising on performance with Halo's GEmini™ and GEmini+™.

The industry's smallest IEEE802.3at compliant PoE and PoE+ Ethernet transformer solutions. The GEmini™ and GEmini+™ reduces the transformer real estate required by up 50%.

Why do you need ethernet magnetics? All Ethernet enabled equipment has to include magnetics as the Ethernet specification for 10/100/1000BASE-T networks requires a certain level of galvanic isolation from the cable. Transformers provide common mode rejection which is useful for noise attenuation between the PHY device (transceiver IC) and the physical medium (cable). One option for Ethernet magnetics that is widely used is to add an Ethernet magnetic module to your design's PCB, between the PHY chip and the connector jack.

How do you choose? The Ethernet standard indicates the properties magnetics need to have. After that, look for a discrete magnetic module's common mode rejection figures as well as the insertion loss at different frequencies. Checking the literature for the PHY chip in your design will often reveal the manufacturer's recommendations based on specific modules they have tested alongside their own chip.

How can HALO help?

The GEmini™ and GEmini+™ series are UL60950, EN60950 and DEMKO recognized for SELV to TNV-1 applications and meet the requirements of IEEE802.3 for 10/100 and Gigabit.

This series is available in both commercial and industrial temperature ranges and is designed for traditional Gigabit Ethernet or Gigabit with Power Over Ethernet (POE) applications. As well, the dual nature of the GEmini(tm) series enables it to be used in high density dual port 10/100 Ethernet or dual port 10/100 with POE applications providing a significant reduction in real estate while reducing the component count.

ESA Space-Qualified Backplane Connector

The first COTS Plus 2mm Hard Metric backplane connector, tested and qualified to ESA ESCC 3401 specifications. The SpaceNXT™ Aurora connectors have gone through extensive qualification testing to ESA ESCC 3401 specifications in order to validate today's rigorous application requirements per customer and industry.

Overview

Today, products available on the market require expensive qualification testing which costs are fully absorbed by the customer. By introducing Aurora solutions to the LEO satellites space market, customers reduce their lead times, lower their cost of ownership, and increase their confidence that products will meet their specifications and needs.

The range is available in three sizes of 55, 110 and 125 contacts in industry standard gender configuration, in straight and right-angle configurations. SpaceNXT™ Aurora is offered with 1.27 micron gold plating for improved durability and resistance to fretting corrosion versus standard COTS Hard Metric connectors.

What is a LEO satellite? A LEO satellite is a low earth orbit satellite constellation usually at an altitude of less than 1000 km but could be as low as 160 km above Earth.

How are LEO satellite constellations changing communications? IoT devices in remote areas such as deserts, forests, and oceans, or in extreme topographical areas are unable to have direct terrestrial network accesses which then can only be covered by satellite. LEO satellite constellation has the advantages of low propagation delay, small propagation loss and global coverage.

Outgassing and it's effects on space applications

Kensington News...

June 1, 2021

Outgassing and it's effects on space applications and how Kensington's Manufacturers can help...

Outgassing is defined as the release of a gas that was dissolved, trapped, frozen, or absorbed in some material. Outgassing is usually most relevant in vacuum applications. This makes outgassing, and the addressing of, crucial in selecting electronic components in critical applications such as satellites and other space-based equipment to medical equipment. Look for ASTM E595-07 rated materials for the lowest outgassing materials available.

Smiths Interconnect is the supplier of choice for safe, efficient and highly reliable connectivity in space applications. Our proven expertise and know how, gained over more than 60 years in the space market, enable us to design innovative solutions that are smaller, lighter weight and robust where increased ruggedness is paramount to withstand vibration, shock, temperature extremes and radiation.

Smiths Interconnect Space Brochure

Smiths Interconnect recently launched its SpaceNXT™ Series, an overarching initiative that entails the creation of higher reliability products for next generation space applications that are readily available to the market. By offering components that are pre-tested and qualified for space use Smiths Interconnect helps customers reduce their lead times.

Axon' Cable designs and manufactures ESA and space-grade wires and cables, miniature connectors, and cable assemblies and harnesses for a large number of space applications (ISS, planetary missions, satellites etc). "We are very well-versed in the constraints of the space market, and take out-gassing into account from the very beginning of the design of our tailor-made interconnect links," said Sandrine Hermant, marketing project manager at Axon' Cable. "We select materials such as thermoplastics, polyimide, or PTFE with low outgassing properties for our wires and cables. The materials of the inserts and seals used in our connectors are selected with the same concern. Materials involved in the manufacturing process are also chosen to limit outgassing; for example, the potting process used to manufacture bus bars."

Axon' Expertise in Space: Cables and Interconnect Solutions

Omnetics Connector Corporation has a rich history of supporting orbital and deep space projects. Their connectors have been used on the Co-Star, Space Shuttle, Mars Rover and Iridium satellite, to name a few. Alps Force Sensor

    Alps News...

    April 5, 2019

Alps Alpine Develops Force Sensor with High Impact Resistance

Alps Alpine Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of high-quality electronic products, has added the HSFPAR004A Force Sensor to its lineup. The sensor enhances impact resistance while maintaining the industry's smallest size and offers high linearity and high resolution, which makes it ideal for use in stylus pens and other input devices.

These days, electronic blackboards and tablets are being used on several occasions, such as school sessions and company meetings. Therefore, demand for pen-shaped devices (stylus pen), which are mostly used for the purpose of working creatively - including digital drawing and painting - has been growing. Stylus pens, or styli, contain force sensors that trace the trajectory of the pen tip and then reproduce different thicknesses in the artwork corresponding to the pressure applied. Styli require a sensor with high resolution and linearity, but also need to be sturdy enough to not break when the pen is unintentionally dropped.

The HSFPAR004A lives up to these requirements because it maintains the features of already existing products for high linearity (<2%fs), high resolution (detects micro force with less than 0.01 n), and small size of 2.00 mm x 1.60 mm x 0.66 mm (WxDxH), while at the same time realizing an improvement in impact resistance of up to 55 n. the sensor offers an operating life of 1,000,000 cycles and is resistant to external magnetic and electric fields. besides its use in input devices, the sensor is suitable for industrial machines handling precision equipment and a range of diverse applications, especially on the grip parts of robot arms for precision grip force adjustments.

    KEY FEATURES:
    • High impact resistance proved by a breaking load of 55 N
    • Detects micro force of less than 0.01 N
    • Long operating life of more than 1 million cycles
    • Resistant to external magnetic fields and electric fields

Conec's SuperCon® Series hybrid connector system

    Conec News...

    September 11, 2018

Conec's IP67-rated SuperCon® Series connector combines power and data transmission to save cost and space in interface wiring applications.

CONEC has launched a hybrid power and signal circular connector that saves time and costs for cabling, installation and maintenance for conventional wiring of applications like motors, servo drives, linear units/drives and more. By combining power supply and data transmission into one single connector, the compact SuperCon® Series hybrid connector system saves space by eliminating the need for an additional wire and connector.

The rugged IP67-rated connector features a safe and secure connection via a bayonet locking mechanism.

The SuperCon® Series is available in three different sizes, depending on specific applications: B12, B17 and B23. While the number of pins and the permitted voltages vary depending on the size, the 360 degree shielded data core is always the same and is designed for industrial Ethernet Cat 5 with wire cross section AWG22.

Each pin layout is available with a minimum of two different codings that are marked by different color rings. As a result, mismating is impossible.

Sockets are available in various housing variants for front- and back-panel mounting and the installation heights vary on the outside or the inside of the housing. Thus, decentralized wiring chains can be realized with and without daisy chain topology with a cost saving one-cable solution.

    Telegartner News...

    August 7, 2018

    Telegartner's SIMFix® series

The reliability of a mobile communication connection depends essentially on the antenna used. This must ensure reliable transmission and reception of data and signals even under the most difficult conditions and stress situations. Telegartner offers the suitable HF connectors as well as RJ45 and FO components for this.

The RF connectors in the series SIMFix® are rugged connectors with threaded coupling for use in high performance transmitter applications. These connectors are waterproof and are suitable for external use. Furthermore, they are designed to provide excellent technical performance, especially concerning return loss and intermodulation.

The SIMFix® range includes RF connectors for terminating 1/4", 1/2" flex, 1/2", 7/8", 1-1/2" and 1-5/8" sized corrugated cables.

Assembly for all sizes is simple and reliable, thus guaranteeing constantly good electrical performance with regard to return loss and intermodulation. Ease of termination of the cables has been greatly enhanced by the use of specially developed tooling, which allows for exact stripping of the corrugated cables in the shortest of time.

    Telegartner SIMFix Series

    Protection Step 1:
An O-ring on the outer jacket of the cable guarantees reliable protection against the ingress of water in normal applications of an undamaged cable.

    Protection Step 2:
A special sealing to the outer conductor of the cable. Damage to the cable's outer jacket poses the danger that water will enter the connector between the outer jacket and the outer conductor of the cable. This is prevented by the additional sealing.

    Protection Step 3:
Barrier sealed by protective steps taken on center contact. Massive destruction of the cable resulting in water ingress into the dielectric and possibly even into the inner conductor can destroy the following cable segment and even damage the base station, if water is able to seep through the connector.

Smiths Product Change: KVPX Backplane Connectors

    Smiths Interconnect News...

    December 5, 2017

    Product Change Notification

Products Impacted: KVPX Backplane Connectors (all p/n's beginning with KX2)
    Change Type: Dimensional
Date of Change Implementation: February - March, 2018

KVPX Backplane Connectors (all p/ns beginning with KX2)

In order to provide product to best serve our customers' needs, Smiths Interconnect listens to feedback provided by the market. In the case of the KVPX, feedback from our customers has indicated decreasing the insulator height on the backplane connector would provide greater ease in error free mating, particularly in applications where guide hardware is utilized. Therefore, we are making a permanent change to the insulator; dimensional change illustrated below.

This update will be made as a 'running' change, with the part number remaining the same. Insulators with the existing design shall be consumed until the updated tooling has been qualified. At this time, connectors will begin using the newer design insulator. We are currently estimating the cut over to occur in the February - March, 2018 time frame. All attempts will be made to include one version per shipment.

For questions or concerns, email Bonnie Shores, National Sales Manager. To download the new KVPX brochure, click HERE.

    Autosplice antenna contact

    Autosplice News...

    May 2013

Compact One-Piece Contacts Optimized for Applications in Mobile Wireless Devices

Autosplice has introduced a new series of compact surface mount contacts for antenna applications in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The new single-piece contact designs are ideally suited for Near Field Communications (NFC) Antenna requirements as well as other grounding applications within wireless communications designs and are superior to existing two-piece molded products.

Typical existing antenna clips use multi-piece configurations that are manufactured through the assembly of the antenna contact terminal to an injection molded base, with separate fixing pins to support the SMD interface. This approach increases complexity and quality risk, as well as increasing manufacturing costs.

In contrast, the new Autosplice crush-proof antenna clips integrate both the antenna contact and the base into a unified single-piece stamping that improves reliability and reduces cost. Since the entire contact is formed from stamped copper alloy, contact resistance and mechanical stability during vibration are superior to multi-piece designs. In addition, the footprint of the one-piece contacts can be significantly smaller, requiring less PCB space and allowing for overall better fit, form and function.

Autosplice antenna clip products are manufactured from stamped copper alloy material and are available in standard 13" tape and reel for ease of pick and place assembly. The clips are also available in a variety of heights to accommodate specific antenna and product design requirements while minimizing PCB real estate usage.

NFC is a form of contactless communication between devices like smartphones or tablets, which enables a user to wave the smartphone over a NFC compatible device to send information without needing to touch the devices together or go through multiple steps setting up a connection. Fast and convenient, NFC technology is popular in many parts of Europe and Asia, and is quickly spreading throughout the United States. By integrating credit cards, subway tickets, and paper coupons all into one device, NFC enables a user to board a train, pay for groceries, redeem coupons or loyalty points, and exchange contact information all with the wave of a smartphone.

One of the major challenges for integrating NFC into a product is making sure that the antenna will meet the requirements of NFC standards, such as ISO 14443B and NFCForum Type 4 tag compliance. Successful integration depends on precision control of the size, shape, material and positioning of the antenna, along with the need for robust resistance to vibration and shock under a wide range of operating conditions. NFC antenna designers need access to contacts such as the new single-piece Autosplice design that can provide maximum configuration flexibility and reliability while also minimizing cost and size.

The new single-piece antenna clip designs from Autosplice are already being used in leading mobile devices that account for over 300 million contacts per month and are currently being designed into many more NFC-enabled devices because of the inherent cost advantages and manufacturing efficiencies.

photovoltaic connector with RADSOK (radial socket contact) technology

    Amphenol News...

    May 2, 2011

    Helios h2 Panel Connector a low-power-loss option

Amphenol Industrial has incorporated its trademarked RADSOK (radial socket contact) technology into its latest photovoltaic connector, the Helios h2. VIEW a Slideshare presentation on Amphenol's RADSOK.

According to Amphenol, "RADSOK technology is based on a stamped and formed flat grid, uniquely twisted into a hyperbolic geometry to provide robust, high-density contact to the mating pin contact. Unlike most other pin-and-socket solutions, the RADSOK also utilizes the tensile strength properties of the flat, high-conductivity alloy grid. This provides the high normal forces required for conductivity while also providing a large conductive surface area. Correspondingly, low voltage drop and low temperature rise are achieved while maintaining low insertion forces."

The company says those characteristics make the Helios h2 Panel Connector a low-power-loss option. The connector feeds power from a solar panel to either an inverter or combiner box. According to Amphenol, it complies with requirements of the 2008 National Electrical Code without requiring any additional locking collars or sleeves. Gauge sizes available are 14 AWG (rated at 36 A), 12 AWG (rated at 45 A) and 10 AWG (rated at 52 A).
